Putting an end to the long wait for the expansion of the metro network in the Millennium City, Chief Minister Nayab Saini on Tuesday said the construction for the 28.50 km-long metro rail network connecting the existing Millennium City Centre metro station to the Cyber City metro network passing through the Old City would commence on May 1, 2025.
Mr. Saini made the announcement after he chaired a meeting of Gurugram Metro Rail Limited (GMRL).
Prime Minister Narendra Modi laid the foundation stone for the project at a rally in Rewari on February 16. The Haryana and Central governments have already approved the Detailed Project Report to expand the network.
Passing through the city’s railway station and Sector 22, the network will have 27 metro stations and a depot built at the cost of ₹5452.72 crore. Eight metro stations would be model stations, and the project would likely be completed in four years’ time, said Mr Saini.
The new metro network will run on a Communication-Based Train Control signalling system, and the maximum speed of the trains will be 80 km per hour. Initially, it will operate with three coaches, expandable to six.
Five underpasses and flyovers would also be built as part the metro expansion project, said Mr. Saini.

The tender for the appointment of the consultant for the construction of the depot and the first civil package — Millennium City Centre to Sector-9 and Sector-101 Dwarka, covering a total length of around 13 km -- would be invited by January 31, 2025. For the remaining portion — Sector 9 to Cyber City — the tenders would be invited by February 15. An executive committee and a coordination committee have also been constituted to oversee the implementation of the project.
The setting up of ten model industrial townships – one of the major poll promises of the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party – was also discussed in the meeting. Chief Principal Secretary to Chief Minister, Rajesh Khullar, who attended the meeting online, assured that plans for the model industrial cities with comprehensive facilities would be prepared and presented during the upcoming budget session.
